Interview with my husband

Interview with my husband

In the following video, we are discussing my husband’s experience of supporting me through the process of my recovery from postpartum bipolar disorder with psychotic features: his support strategies, his feelings, and needs through this hardship and how things have changed since my recovery.

In October 2009, one month after the birth of our first child, I was admitted to hospital where I received the diagnosis of a bipolar disorder of postpartum onset with psychotic features.  I was indeed experiencing a manic episode with delusions and hallucination.  A few months later, I went through depression.  With no family history of bipolar disorder and no symptoms before birth, this was a complete shock to me (and my husband).   I have been blessed to have my supporting husband helping me go through this adversity.  His support has been very precious.  We want to share with you what he has done to help me but also talk about how he experienced the whole thing.  I think we generally put emphasis on the mother’s experience of postpartum mood and anxiety disorder and we tend to talk less about what fathers are experiencing as well while supporting their partner.  It is hard for them too.  We need to talk more about it.
